NHC: Natural Human Consciousness

The Formula: NHC = C(S + In + It + U) × I ≠ 0

Background

The Elemental Reason originally proposed that empirical existence (E) is the product of three components: Consciousness (C), Intentionality (I), and Knowledge (K), expressed as E = C × I × K ≠ 0. The ≠ 0 condition stipulates that all three components are necessary — if any one equals zero, empirical existence collapses.

In a subsequent conversation grounded in two papers by Mart Wijn — The Human Default State: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.22096131 and Beyond System 1 and System 2 there is Unbounded Logic: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.22982353 — the formula was examined component by component against its neurobiological foundations. This process revealed that K (Knowledge) does not belong in the formula. Accumulated knowledge is not a component of perception; it is interference with perception. The formula required both a revision and an expansion. In the framework developed here, E is not merely produced by Natural Human Consciousness — E is NHC.

Neurobiological Foundation

The revised formula rests on the neurobiological architecture described in The Human Default State. The default state is defined as the original operational configuration of the human organism: right-hemisphere dominant, with the Default Mode Network (DMN) operating in processing mode rather than narrative mode.

In this state, the right hemisphere functions as the primary receiver of raw, unmediated experience. The left hemisphere functions as servant rather than master — activated only when communication, analysis, or skill execution is required, and returning to silence afterward. This is not a spiritual achievement or a developmental stage to be surpassed. It is the factory settings of human consciousness, present at birth and recoverable.

Critically, this architecture contains four inseparable components that operate simultaneously, without interference, registering the complete picture of reality in the present moment:

  • Senses (S) — all sensory information, raw and unfiltered
  • Instinct (In) — a pre-cognitive screener that orients the organism before language intervenes
  • Intuition (It) — the gatekeeper of reality and truth; it recognizes what is coherent and real without judgment or negative valence
  • Unbounded Logic (U) — pure relational processing freed from the constraints of accumulated knowledge; it identifies gaps, inconsistencies, and structural patterns across domains without prior expertise

The Formula: NHC = C(S + In + It + U) × I ≠ 0

NHC = C(S + In + It + U) × I ≠ 0

Where:

SymbolFull termDefinition
NHCNatural Human ConsciousnessThe complete architecture of human experience; NHC is not produced by the formula — it is what the formula describes
CConsciousness — NHC in its active stateRight-hemisphere dominant, unmediated direct experience
SSensesAll sensory input, raw and unfiltered
InInstinctPre-cognitive perceptual screener, operates below language
ItIntuitionGatekeeper of truth; recognizes coherence without judgment
UUnbounded LogicPure relational processing, unconstrained by stored knowledge
IInformation / TranslationThe transfer from right to left hemisphere; reality as articulable content

The ≠ 0 condition holds: if C is absent, NHC has no ground; if I is absent, NHC remains real but unnamed and incommunicable. NHC is not something empirical existence points to — NHC is empirical existence.

Why K Is Removed

In the original formula, K represented accumulated Knowledge. The revision removes it entirely, and the reasoning is neurobiologically precise.

Knowledge, as it accumulates in the left hemisphere, is not a component of perception — it is a filter applied over perception. Every concept, label, and inherited assumption that the left hemisphere adds to incoming experience is a substitution: it replaces direct contact with reality with a representation of it. This is exactly what Beyond System 1 and System 2 demonstrates: both System 1 and System 2 are bounded by their dependence on stored knowledge, which is why neither can produce a paradigm shift. A paradigm shift requires perceiving what the existing knowledge structure has made invisible.

K therefore belongs to a different order. It is the product of repeated and accumulated I — layers of previous translations, stacked and conditioned over time. Including K in the formula for empirical existence is equivalent to including the map in the formula for the territory. The map is useful. But it is not the ground.

Unbounded Logic (U) replaces K not as a different kind of knowledge, but as the absence of knowledge as constraint. U operates on what is actually present, not on what has been stored.

Structure and Sequence

The components of the formula are not equal and interchangeable. They have a specific structure and a specific sequence.

C is the foundation of NHC. The default state — right-hemisphere dominant, DMN in processing mode — is the precondition for everything that follows. Without it, the other components have no ground to operate from.

S, In, It, and U form an inseparable unity within C. They do not operate sequentially. They register the complete picture simultaneously, in the present moment, without interference. The senses deliver raw input; instinct screens it pre-cognitively; intuition recognizes what is real and coherent; unbounded logic perceives structural relationships and gaps. Together they constitute the complete picture — a holistic registration of reality that is already whole before any word is applied to it.

The complete picture is already present before I. The experience registered by C(S + In + It + U) is not incomplete pending translation. It is complete. I is not required for reality to be perceived — only for it to be communicated. The experience exists, unnamed, as a whole.

I is the translation. When the right hemisphere passes what it has registered to the left hemisphere, information is produced. The left hemisphere makes an utterance — it gives the complete picture a name, a fragment, a communicable form. This translation is always partial. Language can never fully carry what was registered. But it is what makes empirical existence shareable and actionable in the world.

NHC is both the ground and the result. NHC expressed as named, communicable reality — always a partial rendering of the complete picture through I, always real, always ≠ 0 as long as the chain holds.

Universal Applicability

The original Elemental Reason claimed that E = C × I × K ≠ 0 holds across all disciplines. The formula NHC = C(S + In + It + U) × I ≠ 0 preserves and strengthens this claim, because the revision removes the one component that is discipline-specific.

K (Knowledge) is always domain-bound. Medical knowledge, legal knowledge, physical knowledge — each is a particular accumulation of stored I, specific to a field. Including K in a universal formula immediately limits its universality.

The revised components are domain-independent by definition:

  • C (the default state) is the biological baseline of the human organism, present before any discipline exists
  • S, In, It, U operate prior to all categorization — they register reality before it is named as belonging to any field
  • I (translation) is the universal act of making experience communicable, regardless of the domain into which it is communicated

In physics, a paradigm shift begins when a researcher perceives what the existing framework has made invisible — C(S + In + It + U) operating before K intervenes. In medicine, a correct diagnosis requires more than stored knowledge; it requires the recognition that something does not cohere — the intuitive gatekeeper functioning cleanly. In law, justice depends on perceiving the actual situation, not only the precedent. In art, the work communicates what cannot be fully said — the complete picture passing only partially through I.

The formula is universal not because it applies to everything, but because it describes the perceptual architecture that underlies all human engagement with reality, in every domain, without exception.

Quantum Collapse and the Formula (draft — to be developed)

A question arises from quantum mechanics: if consciousness can collapse the wave function, as standard interpretations suggest, then C should be influenceable. The formula says otherwise — C is the uninfluenceable ground of experience.

The resolution is precise: quantum collapse does not touch C. It touches I.

Before I, the complete picture registered by C(S + In + It + U) exists in a state analogous to superposition — whole, undetermined, containing all possible observations simultaneously. At the moment of I, one articulation is made. One possibility is named. One wave collapses into one particle. This is not a property of consciousness. It is a property of translation.

This reframes quantum collapse: it is not a mysterious physical event that requires consciousness as its cause. It is the unavoidable consequence of language and articulation. To say one thing is to not say all other things that were equally present in the complete picture.

C itself remains untouched. The ocean does not collapse when a wave breaks. The complete picture does not disappear when I makes one utterance from it. C remains the silent, inexhaustible ground — available for the next I, and the next, without depletion and without conditioning.

This also explains a feature of the default state: individuals operating from an intact C are not captured by prior articulations. Each I arises fresh, unconditioned by previous collapses. The wave function, so to speak, resets — not because anything is cleared, but because C was never altered to begin with.
